I did a weewee!! / Eu fiz xixi!!

As many of you already know, I work in a childcare centre with children 0-5 years old. And it is wonderful to witness and participate in their discoveries and achievements. I think children give much more value to their successes than adults do.

Basic activities in the life of a human being are developed and refined with dedication and enchantment every day by the children. A simple cheer from the educator for helping to tidy the room or the joy of having given the first step is something the child celebrates with a power so great that disconcerts me and brings tears to my eyes. And this happens all the time, every day, in front of me!

This week, Julia*, two and half years old, arrived at the centre lifting the front of her dress to show the panties she wore over the usual diaper. She had a big smile and spoke unintelligible words but we knew meant that 'she now would use the toilet and no longer the nappy changing room, like the other babies'!

Well, the second time Julia visited the toilet that day, I heard the pee she released with a serious face, concentrating. I told her, 'Julia, you're doing a weewee on the toilet! Like a big girl!!' And almost melted with her excitment: 'I did a weewee!!'

As usual, I called the other educators to celebrate with us and Julia could barely stand up to wipe herself, so excited she was with the applause and words of encouragement. She left the bathroom hopping in her joy!

On that day, despite being taken to the bathroom at all scheduled times for changing diapers and also every time she asked us to go, she still had the diaper on, as a safety measure. But the next day, Julia came without diaper and wearing only a pair of panties under the dress she proudly once again lifted to show it to everyone.

I think we should continue, even as adults, celebrating every new little big deed and post on Facebook things like 'I finally learned to make bread' or 'now I understand what global warming means, after I read that book by Al Gore' or 'I struggled, but managed to master Billy Jean's choreography'... but it seems that people get embarrassed to admit that learned something new. But, love to tell they 'bought' something new!

I, as I will never grow up - I swear to God I won't! - I tell you that I will continue sharing with you every little big discovery I make. If you want to be up-to-date, just visit the blog regularly! ;-)

*Julia is not her real name. I changed the name to preserve the little girls identity.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Livre Estou / Let it go

Livre Estou

Que venham perguntas e choramingos!! Estou preparada pra dançar e cantar com eles... "livre estou, livre estou..." :-)

I know very well how it feels to be in a place where people speak a different language! I'm Brazilian and, until my adolescence, I spoke only Portuguese.

Years later, I spent a few months in Germany and, although I could speak a little German, I felt like I was deaf most of the time since I couldn't understand almost anything of what was spoken around me.

When I moved to Singapore, I already spoke English pretty well to think that I wouldn't have problems to communicate. Silly rabbit!! The place is full of people of many nationalities and languages that I didn't even know existed: Tagalog, Bahasa, Tamil, Hokkien ...

In Australia, I understand well and am well understood and already got used to the local accent.

But communication is not merely the use of the official language of the country where you are. We must have much more information beyond language to maintain an effective connection with people. It is important to become aware of local customs in relation to politics, sports, religion, taboos, music, food etc.

This year, I started a new career and am still getting used to the peculiarities related to this new industry: pre-school education. But, so far, the biggest (and coolest!) challenge has been to understand a language, I'm sure, is very similar in almost every country today: children vocabulary!

I say this because, with the rapidity of communication and marketing of consumer goods today, children worldwide have interests in common: Lego, Minecraft, Sims, Frozen, Transformers, Spider Man etc.

The other day one of 'my' kids whined saying 'I need my Elssa' and I had no idea what he was talking about. The next day, a 'princess in grayish blue dress' swirled humming a beautiful song that I didn't know. Yesterday, another 'princess in grayish blue dress' arrived at the childcare centre and the other little 'princesses' went crazy! They ran to hug her pointing a picture of a blonde princess on the front of her dress. Guess who was the princess in the photo: Elsa, the Princess that becomes Queen of Arendelle and has the power to create ice with her bare hands.

Frozen is the hit of the moment amongst the children of the world, apparently! So, I had to do my homework and watch the movie. Since last night I can't stop singing "let it go, let it go..." Twirling around the living room... "let it go, let it go..." My husband can't stand it anymore! hehehe But the film's soundtrack is beautiful and this song hasn't won an Oscar for no reason!! Let it go

Let the questions and whimpers come!! I'm ready to dance and sing along with them ... "let it go, let it go ...":-)

Equanimidade / Equanimity.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few weeks ago, I heard from someone dear to me that I'm more equanimous than I think. That made me glad because it opened my eyes to face in a different way a characteristic of mine that I never really liked much: the 'Pollyanna attitude' of thinking that no misfortune is so terrible that has no remedy. It used to make me feel as if I gave less importance than I should to the problems.

For those who don't know or don't remember, Pollyanna is the main character of the book with the same name, published in 1913 by Eleanor H. Porter that became a movie in 1960. It is the story of a poor girl, orphan who is sent to the care of her aunt, her only relative left, and goes through a lot of ill-bits in her young life.

When I read the book in my early teens, I remember how much I identified myself with the girl in the story! Not because of the problems she had to face in each new paragraph, but because of the attitude she had towards them. Pollyanna believed that nothing was as bad as it seemed and always found a positive point in every event, to what she called the Glad Game.

I learned, as I was growing up, that it was no use to sit down and cry every time something went wrong. That no problem would resolve by itself and that I had to get up and do something to fix it or change it, if there was anything to be done.

That attitude has a name and it is called equanimity. It's the attitude of not connecting to any kind of feeling, good or bad, caused by a situation, good or bad. It is maintaining the perfect balance of your mood.

When the mind is free of judgments like "damned", "bad luck", "wonderful" or "fantastic", we can see things as they really are and make the right decision without bias or the influence of our feelings, which makes us less rational and fogs our logical thinking. That's the old idea of being more rational and less emotional.

That doesn't mean that I'm devoid of feelings. The equanimous person is usually very sensitive about her/himself, about others and about what happens around, but she/he tries to never let her/him feelings get in the way and take over her/him reasoning.

The depressed or euphoric mind sees qualities and situations that can not exactly portray the reality. And I always had this ability. So, in recent years, I've been exploring and developing more and more each day my natural equanimity, which helps me a lot to deal with difficulties and with the acceptance of things as they really are, myself included! :-)

Paz interior / Inner peace.

... continua...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Much of my life I spent with a feeling that, occasionally, would appear on the surface and tell me that I wasn't putting enough effort in my life.

I've always been a very active and very responsible person. Since childhood, I was obedient to my mother and used to fulfil all my tasks: go to school, make my bed, keep my toys and books in order etc, besides homework. And even managed to make time to play and enjoy myself. When my mother returned to the workforce, I took responsibility over the house in the afternoons, after school. At age of nine, I used to cook, clean-up and look after my younger brother.

I got my first job when I was 15 years old. I used to work all day and study at night. I graduated from Technical High School already employed in that industry; later studied languages, and by the time I got married, at twenty-two, I already spoke English and German. I finished college and was sent to Germany for training specialization by the company where worked at the time.

Even after many years of work, collecting additional professional qualifications, getting a number of promotions and 'surviving' many bosses who didn't survive the changes that every company goes through, from time to time, that feeling of incapacity stubbornly haunted me.

I already had my financial independence, a house, a car and a quite healthy social life. And even one or two  'friends' that eventually would prove envious of the life I led.

At that point in my life, I was already mature enough to decide it was time to investigate further what was that pinch in the stomach I would have when I heard someone say something like 'my plans for the next 5 years are ...' or 'pne must change jobs every four years to not stagnate' or 'the real estate market is high, I will invest in property' or 'I'm increasing my network'.

To justify my inability to planning and drawing my future like those people, I used to say that 'I accepted the opportunities that life gave me.' But that argument didn't sound like enough, not even to myself!...

The 'stomach pinching' feeling was a physical symptom caused by the thought of inability to be successful in life like everyone I knew. Investigating my emotions and attitudes, with myself and with the help of a therapist, I learned that I was very capable (up to arouse envy in others!) and that I had achieved many things, material and nonmaterial, and that it they were not the same things that my friends and colleagues had it was because our priorities were different, after all we were different people!

Years later, after living different realities and situations that greatly enriched my view of things and of life, I feel finally at peace with my attitude of making decisions according to the opportunities life presents me! Sure that I pursue some things and do basic plans to achieve them, but I deal well with any change or plan B that appears necessary on the way.

Buddha used to remind all that 'desire is a dangerous thing and can bring a lot of dissatisfaction and frustration'. When I heard that teaching for the first time, I thought 'that's it, I don't expect much from life, so I've never been much of planning for the future', and probably exactly because of that I can tackle the problems that arise, without falling into deep frustration . :-)

... to be continued ...

Sonho de consumo mudado. / Consumer dream changed.

Eu realmente me divirto na cozinha! :-)

Minha preferência é a confeitaria e a panificação.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't know much about cars. In fact, who is said to be a cars expert will tell you that I don't know a thing abou it, at all!! Not even brands and models I'm able to recognize easily ... but there is a brand that has always caught my eyes: I can identify a Mercedes from meters away!

Between my second and third decades of life, I used to say that my dream was to have a silver Mercedes. Of course, not even bothered about which model
because I wouldn't know it anyway! I always thought of a silver Mercedes as the top of the motorized elegance! haha

But as Buddha wisely said that everything changes, I changed and so did my dream of consumption. Now, I want a customized KitchenAid!

In the last three years I have been cooking a lot, like never before in my life. And I love to cook! In fact, I never knew how being among pans and flour and fruits gives me great pleasure!! I really have fun in the kitchen! :-)

My preference is confectionery and baking. Every week, I come up with some dessert, a new recipe to try or I 'make up' a special occasion just to make a special dish! And, most often, it will be a cake or a pie or bread or candies... and it will require litres of batter, frosting, ganache, whipped cream etc.

Since 2011, we've done two stand mixer up-grades and the one I have today is quite good, but is not a KitchenAid! It has all attachments I need, but is not a KitchenAid! If it's not for too long neither too heavy mixture, it tackles well the duty, but is not a KitchenAid! It is white and of a quite modern design, but it is not a KitchenAid! ... Got it?

A month ago, more or less, during one of my searches for ideas and recipes on the internet, I came across a photo of a Wonder Woman KitchenAid!!! It blew my mind! So, I started looking for other models and how they were marketed.

Well, I discovered that there is a large market for custom kitchen items: trivial items that are modified to get more personality and more expensive! You can find custom anything: bowls, trays, cutlery, pots, kettles, blenders, tea towels ... and stand mixers ... all with a character, of a personalised style! Most often, they are found in shops, popular or sophisticated shops. But there are people who make a living customizing these pieces.

I found ateliers, worldwide, that accept orders of customized kitchen items with a totally personalized design, one-of-a-kind. And one of those customers has commissioned that Wonder Woman KitchenAid I accidentally found the photo on the internet.

I actually don't care much about whether I have or not such a mixer, but a little of silly dreaming never hurt anyone, did it? ;-)

PS: the custom KitchenAid OF MY DREAMS is yellow with a black stripe on the side and a gleaming samurai sword on top!! Anyone who watched Kill Bill knows what I mean ...;-)
