De feio, já basta o Tiririca!! / Ugly!!

Ugly!

Have you noticed how people like ugly things? I'm not talking about people out of shape or poorly dressed ...

The evenings are filled with disgrace, vulgarity, anger and shouting, because of TV shows such as Cidade Alerta (Alert City) and Brasil Urgente (Urgent Brazil), leaders of the time, behind only the soap opera on Globo channel. These are programs that exploit the problems of citizens with refinement of details, highlighting at length the people's mayhem.

Another free show is when there's a car crash. The traffic gets slow, even if those involved are properly positioned on the side lane, because the other drivers who slow down to "see what is happening!"

Likewise, do the funeral "crashers", the gossippers, the quarrelsome, the idle curious'. These are people who seek the ugly side of life. They appreciate trouble, especially if they are not involved in it.

There's also those guys, usually quite young, who like violent movies.Blood, machine guns, cops, addicteds, serial killers etc..

All those situations cause, almost always, a big shot of adrenaline. We feel somewhat agitated, distressed, angry, desperate, sad. These feelings can lead us to act in a negative way, with curses, bad mood altering the volume of our voice, acting violently, becoming bitter or even accepting the "disgrace that life is"!

I'm not saying this happens to everyone, but I think the overexposure to ugly things helps us to worsen our quality of life.

That is the sense I use the word "ugly". Anything that causes discomfort, anger, sadness is ugly! And I believe that if we care less about those things and pay more attention to the sunny days and value more the health of our body, a good bowl of rice, beans and fried egg freshly prepared by mummy, lively conversation with a stranger, a hug of a friend, life will look much more beautiful. :-)

Uma taça de vinho por dia. Meia taça de vinho por dia. / A glass of wine a day. Half glass of wine a day.

A glass of wine a day. Half glass of wine a day.
Arghhh ... I've just read an article in http://www.terra.com.br/ that made me upset! I didn't want to waste time with it, but I decided to use the blog as a channel to vent ... hehehe ... what a drama!

The article's title was "Half-glass of wine a day increases risk of breast cancer." Jeez! I thought a glass of wine a day was good for the heart! Surely you've heard this advice at some point in life, right? Maybe if I drink half a glass ONLY is bad and what's good is actually to drink the FULL cup!

Now, tell me, what do I do with that glass of Chilean carmenere on my side table? I have only sipped it a bit, I think I still haven't got halfway ... Should I take the whole cup or should I stop now?! :-O

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some time ago I heard a friend of mine who works in the food industry that, during a survey with consumers of margarine, she heard some of that "margarine is not fattening because it doesn't contain fat, as butter"!

I have heard also that light is the product that contains no fat, when diet, is the product that contains no sugar! Or that light contains less sugar than the regular product and that diet contains no sugar at all!

As I already mentioned in another post here on the blog, many people don't have much knowledge about the content of food. I meant in the post the natural nutrients. But, in the case of industrialized products, the doubts often go beyond this question and turn into confusion.  Without proper guidance, we end up getting lost in the information on the labels. When we read the labels! Some people, never do it!

The supermarket shelves are full of options "low this", "that light", "that diet". Do you know what these terms mean?

Well, every country has its own legal definition for each term. In Brazil, who runs it is ANVISA (National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance) and all industrialized foods that are sold in the country should be labeled with the appropriate term, approved by that agency. Searching the website   http://www.anvisa.gov.br/ , you can get the definitions of terms used in food labeling. I quote here, simply, the most common of them:

DIET: food for the different diets to meet the needs of people in specific metabolic and physiological conditions. The maximum use of the specific nutrient (sugar, fat, salt, protein, etc.) varies from product to product. Eg bread with reduced salt (sodium).

LIGHT: should contain 25% less of the specific nutrient (sugar, fat, protein, etc.) than the regular product (not light).

LOW: for each specific nutrient product, there is a limit of use. For example, if the regular soda contains 5% sugar, LOW SUGAR soda contains 0.5% sugar only.

FREE (NO, ZERO): for each specific nutrient, there is a limit of use. For example, if the regular cookie contains 3% of total fat, the FAT FREE cookie contains 0.5% of total fat, max.

Note: All maximum values contained in the table of ANVISA are relative to the consumption portion (slice, cup, plate, unit etc).

Complex, huh? We have to get used to read the labels carefully. Practice this habit every day, every time we buy industrialized food. And when in doubt, search the site of ANVISA (above) or ask the nearest dietitian.

But if you ask me: go with the natural! Home food needs no label and we can forget about all this confusion of   diet or light. Just do not forget the amount of sugar, salt and fat in each meal!  Reduced or not, just shouldn't be exaggerated! ;-)

8 minutos!

No meu caso, sangue tipo A+. Do bão!!

Hoje, acordei cedo e fui doar sangue.

8 MINUTES!

Eight minutes is the time it takes to save the lives of up to three people! I'm talking about the time of "extraction" of 400ml of blood. In my case, blood type A+. Good blood!!

Today, I woke up early and went to donate blood. I usually donate once a year and, thankfully, never got sick. This time was no different, even the body helped and left the nurse to easily find a vein, a chubby one, to insert the needle! hehe

I stayed there, pressing the rubber ball and chatting. Eight minutes! Time enough to take this pic though ... :-)

Ah, they even give you ham and cheese sandwich with juice, before you leave! ;-)

Passa dia e noite assi i im.

What's in this food that is good for me?

Quem vem comigo? :-D

What's in this food that is good for me?

It is this question that we had to do whenever we choose or are offered something to eat. At least in my opinion.

As children, most of us are still very dependent on others to feed themselves, hence, it is easy to sit back and simply swallow anything.Whether at home with the food made by mummy or the wife or even by Sadia, whether in restaurants, at the school canteen etc. The fact is that, in seeking convenience when we feel hungry, we leave the decision about the quality of   our own food in the hands of others.Specially a society that values the power of choice so much not know, in most cases, what was used in the composition of his/her own plate!

Well, it's not my intent to be giving earful in adult grown man. Just wanted to make a point of view to clarify the reasoning that leads me to believe that nutrition education should be taught at school.I think we should go far beyond the "Food Pyramid" which is presented at the third or fourth grade (in the new system of elementary school, fourth or fifth year). It would be nice that a child was able to understand what each food contains and the benefits (or harm) would bring to its body and be free to decide to eat it or not, aware of the reasons for that decision.

Of course this cannot happen without consent and participation of the parents, they have the key to the success or failure of their children's nourishment health. After all, the first people we are dependent on in life, are the parents. But very soon, these children will begin to make choices without their help, as in school and socializing with their friends, in the cafeterias and shopping malls. And that's when they begin to show how mature they already are to make good choices! Maturity acquired years before, at home and at school.

Since I am an eating freak, for me, it is mandatory that food, in addition to nutritional value, has to taste good! And   I think that any food, any food!, is good.If it tastes good, it's worth eating. The point is that we should be AWARE of the nutrients in that food and know the extent of the "damage" (or benefit) that it will cause in our body. Knowledge that many people don't have!

Researchers have proven that children who have access to healthy foods since early years, take for life the habit of eating well and become youths and adults slim and healthy.

I strongly believe that this would be a good alternative for the struggle of millions of people against various problems related to inadequate nutrition such as obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension and many others.

It is what I will devote myself from now on. Who's coming with me? :-D

Solução? / Solution?

Solution?
Why are we always looking for a "minor" mistake to try to correct another mistake, "greater"?

I hate speed bumps on public roads and ditches too. I hate them! We almost need to stop the car so we can go through them without breaking anything. And what about when they are broken or badly flagged?!Become a hazard rather than a means of increasing traffic safety. But have you ever wondered that those darn things were created to curb the abuse of certain drivers that don't respect the speed limits on streets and highways? Then everyone, even those who follow the traffic rules to the letter, have to live with the "instrument of penalty" in the name of security for all. And just because of some or many but not all. Nor in the name of rationality.

I say this because if they seek to fixing the problem, ultimately, the measure would be quite another. The measure would be taken against the violators ONLY and not against the entire population. One measure would be punishment, but there are several other ways to stop a problem to occur such as proper education, more careful selection of drivers, better traffic engineering etc etc.

It is observed in practically all areas. Isn't it an absurd to pay for employees to "manage" the shopping carts left around the parking lot? Carts that customers dropped anywhere, usually behind your car!, before leaving, because they were lazy to return them to the place where found when they arrived to shop.  But, everyone gets angry when finds no carts at the carts stand, right? So, the supermarket has to employ these people to go hunting for shopping carts through the parking lot, to please a rude clientele!

The banks, in Brazil, had the "brilliant" idea of spoiling money instead of letting the bad guys, the ones that explode ATMs!, to take it. Poor banks, were let down!, once the thievery found a way to literally wash the spotted notes! The banks will have to find another "intelligent" solution for the problem ...! The thinking here is that since there is no way to stop the villain and prevent them to blow up buildings and ATMs, let's pick on them and mess up everyone's day! I include in that all users of ATMs (and more all the citizens who frequent the places where the machines were blown up). Everyone loses: bank, insurance companies, customers, shops owners and even the thieves!

I will call it of micro solution, since solutions such as those cited here only propose to resolve the micro part of a larger problem. And they are usually failures, incomplete and inefficient.

Look what I just read on the news website globo.com: "Salwa al-Mutairi, politician, Islamic activist and television presenter in Kuwait, believes that by buying one (or more) sex slave "imported", the man remains decent, manly and devoted to his wife to avoid being seduced by adultery ."!!! She presented this "proposal" to the Kuwaiti government.

Do I need to say more? :-(

Fun in the kitchen! / Farra na cozinha!

In the past couple of years, I started to feel an urge for going back to natural, simple and healthy. A funny pleasure in doing more than buying. More aware of what I'm eating or drinking, and questioning the need of some sort of comforts that make me less active and less counscious about wastage.

One of the changes this new cycle - remember that a new cycle has just begun in my life? - demanded from me was the concern with food. I'm not only talking about the concern with what I eat, but, also the way I buy food and the way I prepare, discard, waste it.

I believe food has power. Not only as a "fuel" for our bodies, but, as something that really empowers us in many ways, in a broad manner...

I remember how good it was to pick fruits at the orchard in my aunt's backyard. The fruits were so sweet and fresh. And my aunt used to prepare all kinds of delicious desserts for me, my brother and cousins. That usually happened when the family was gathered on Sundays. It is a very warm and comforting memory, and always makes me smile! - and I think that is, at first, because of the fun I had along with the other kids of the family, in the "jungle" that huge backyard seemed to us. Secondly, because the "product" of the fun was the raw material for the day's dessert (sometimes jam or yoghurt to take home). There's also the memory of laughter, talking, music, even fighting sometimes - Italian family... -, but, a memory of safety and warmth.

Now, thinking about those memories in a more rational way, see that the desserts of my childhood used to be pretty healthy and sustainable: produced locally and organically. Made by a housewife, who was hosting, happily, her family. And I believe that a family that cooks and eats together, stays together! About the wasted parts of the fruits, I can't tell much, but I like to believe that my uncle used to compost the soil of the orchard with them!

Cooking is the best way, in my opinion, of energizing oneself!! I think it is good for stimulating creativity, memory, improving self esteem, socializing, fitness, health etc etc. And it is fun! A great way of spending time, like a hobby!

Well, I have been spending more and more time at the kitchen, cooking for myself, my family and friends. But, without any specific objective or pretension. I simply feel good knowing I dedicate time in making a meal - at least, edible! - for people I love!

My favorite creations are with the use of long stocked food such as tin canned preserves or frozen meat. Things that were forgotten for a while in the pantry. I think it is because of my neurosis related to un-used stuff in the house. I must make them move away, where they can be useful. I find stuck energy quite disturbing. So, I open the cabinet and imagine a final dish with one or more ingredients sitting in there.

I'd like to tell how interesting it has been living by my mum's again. I left home more than 15 years ago and now, I'm back, with totally different insights about food - actually, about everything else!, but, let's try to focus here... - and, in order of finding a balance between the two realities, I have been cooking quite a lot. And I'm loving it.

I started cleaning up the cabinets and fridge. Then, suggested a groceries shopping list, with basic items that, in my conception, shouldn't be missing in a kitchen. Put myself at service to help with dinner and from one suggestion to another and another, I've gained the trust of the "boss" and now, she embarks on my craziest creations, supporting, helping out and appreciating it. I have been having fun cooking with my mum at our kitchen, daily. And she's been enjoying the novel meals as well!
If it's a soup, I'll cut the vegetables and she will seasong the broth. When it's a cake, I'll mix all ingredients, she will grease the pan and set up the oven. The ingredients are discussed and decided by both, as a team!

But, if you think it has been all blue skys, be aware that once in a while, the weather in the kitchen gets stormy. Specially when I get angry with wastage! I try all I can to avoid it to happen, but, some vicious habits are very hard to break and I'll keep on advising about the magic a fridge and tupperwares can do! But, the skin is not ripped off of our vegetables anymore! Yay!! And we can finish a slab of fresh white cheese before it goes green! Yay!!

There's also lots of experience and tips exchange, with each other! And recipes too!! Good time with mum at the kitchen! :-D

As frutas eram tão doces e frescas.

Preciso me ver livre delas. Energia parada me incomoda.

Do it yourself and gain time / Faça você mesmo e ganhe tempo.

I was thinking the other day that it seems that a twenty four hours day is too short for most of us to do all things WE SAY we want to do. It seems that lack of time is the real big issue of the human race, of all time!

We spend one third, at least, of the twenty four hours day at work. Should spend another third sleeping, but, surely, not many people can afford this luxury! The third third of the twenty four hours should be enough for us to do whatever we attempt to. But, it isn't!

So, at that day that I was thinking about it, I realised that it doesn't make much sense and I made myself the question "why?". Why can't we simply finish our daily activities and go to bed and have a nice, deserved rest untill the next morning? Why are we always rushing to get things done and, many times, not succeeding in it and need to hire people to clean, wash, paint, cook, fix and even to take care of our children and pets?!

We blame the TIME. This evil thing that seems to play against us. Always trying to escape and disappear somewhere in our precious twenty four hours day. We keep on running after it!

Coming back to my question "why?", I came, of course, to the obvious answer that is we simply have TOO MANY THINGS TO DO! Which I won't question here the reasons for so many activities, jobs and roles. The fact is that we find so many NEEDS, but can't actually deal with everything and have to look for someone else to do it for us.

A few years ago, I've moved to a foreign country and took me some time to find professionals for "first needs" services like house keeping, manicure/pedicure, gym etc. So, I had to do the work myself for a while... you know what? I came to realise that I could do certain things I used to claim I didn't have time for. And, surprisingly, even enjoyed doing those things, like cleaning up, washing, ironing, cooking etc. Even dying my hair and doing my nails became part of my tasks list. Although, later, I've tried some professionals, I still preferred my own way of doing it! After some time, I also realised that that routine actually allowed me more privacy and a better time management, and money saving! I tell you I liked that new style of life!

Now, back to the time issue, I've learned, from that experience, that if I don't have to go out to dye my hair, for example, I can do it myself in less than an hour, at home, before shower. If I go to the salon, I'll have to fix an appointment, negotiate a convenient day and time, drive there, find a park lot, read out-of-date magazines at the waiting room, chit-chat with the hair stylist, then drive back home. It would cost quite an amount and take like 3 hours. Of course, I've got to go simple and not attempt to doing hairlights myself! For that, I'd still be going to a good salon, if I knew one! haha

So, I think this is the crucial point of my wondering. I understood that if I keep life SIMPLE AND EASY, I can do it myself. By doing that way, I believe I save time for other things I couldn't do before. Like cooking! (I'll talk about it another day...).

Please, understand that I'm not saying that everyone should learn how to fix their own car or perform a surgery on their cat, but, that I do ask myself if I'm able to do this or that, on my own, or not. I confess that, in the end, I feel proud and value the job done even more than if I had paid for it.

SIMPLE AND EASY! :-)

A gente culpa o TEMPO. E a gente correndo atrás dele!
